I only got one key when I bought my 2017 outback so I purchased a transponder key. It was a great price, it came fast, and the locksmith had no problem cutting and programming it. A few things I learned during the process: This key requires a programming device connected to the car's computer harness to program the chip. And the programming fee is not cheap. Its expensive enough that it makes the price of the key insignificant. The locksmith told me that they pay a fee to the programming device company every time they program a key. The least expensive way to do it is find a brick-and-mortor store to do it, as calling a mobile outfit's dispatch center will treat it as an emergency and charge appropriately. Also, the car's computer keeps a list of all the registered chip codes, so you can have the locksmith remove the chip codes of any lost keys. The mobile locksmith wanted to charge extra, but I ended up having the brick-and-mortar locksmith do it and he didn't charge extra.
